Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says there would be a full briefing on the latest situation in Christchurch at about 7am this morning.

He told reporters this morning about how Christchurch will be touched by grief over the next few days, and almost everyone will know someone who had died.

He asked for people to be cut some slack today as they may be depressed, tired and angry. He also asked people to help their communities, especially the vulnerable, lonely and elderly, and to take water containers to those who may not be able to get them themselves.

Eighty teams would be heading into the suburbs today checking on the welfare of residents and damage to houses. They would be able to call on engineers to check damage if necessary.

Messages of support and offers of help and money were still pouring in from around the world.

Mr Parker said the generosity is much appreciated.

"People here are very stressed, very tired and very scared and we need to bear that in mind in our transactions as human beings today," he said.

He asked the media to be sensitive to people when asking for news and information. He said the city could not sort out all the problems on their own and that communities would need to pull together to and work with each other.

"You are not alone," said Mr Parker.
