It’s Cup and Show week in Christchurch and spray tans are in hot demand – with one salon averaging three tans every five minutes today.

The glamour event attracts thousands of Cantabrians each year, keen for fun in the sun, the latest fashion and seven days worth of racing.

But no fashion frock is complete without a golden tan, and Olivia Gutherie from Sun Kissed Tan says hundreds have booked in for a last minute bronzing.

The salon even extended its hours until midnight to help meet demand.

“[Our store] is definitely, without a doubt, the busiest in New Zealand,” she says.

“No one else beats us in terms of volume of spray tan, or tans put through per week”.

She says more than 380 tans have been booked so far this week – almost triple their usual numbers.

Located near the show grounds and the University of Canterbury, the salon is popular among young people and students.

Ms Gutherie says the business is less than two years old but has proved surprisingly popular.

“The earthquake inspired us to go ahead and do something different, it really gave us an opportunity to re-evaluate things,” she says.

Cup and Show week is the busiest of the year for Christchurch, bringing in an estimated $30 million to the region.

This year’s show even has a royal touch, with Prince Charles and Princess Camilla expected to make an appearance.

The royal couple, however, are yet to book a tan for this year’s event.
