SEVERE WEATHER WARNING.
ISSUED BY MetService AT 8:50pm 03-May-2016
URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Westland, Fiordland, Wairarapa,
Kapiti Horowhenua, Wellington

HEAVY RAIN FOR FIORDLAND AND WESTLAND.
A low is expected to develop on a trough over the Tasman Sea during
Wednesday, then the system should then cross the country on Thursday.
A moist northerly flow precedes the trough, bringing heavy rain to
Westland and Fiordland. The largest accumulations are expected to be
about the ranges of Westland from Otira southwards, where 150 to
200mm could accumulate from Wednesday morning until Thursday morning.
People are advised that streams and rivers are likely to rise rapidly
and slips are possible in vulnerable areas.
Note, the Warning for heavy rain about the Tararua Range today is
lifted.

FORECAST:
Rain is expected to become heavy Wednesday morning and should ease
Thursday morning. In the 24 hours from 6am Wednesday to 6am Thursday
expect 150 to 200mm about the ranges and 60-90mm closer to the coast.
Peak intensities of 20 to 30mm per hour Wednesday afternoon and
evening.
FREEZING LEVEL: 3000 metres.
AREA/S AFFECTED: FIORDLAND NORTH OF DOUBTFUL SOUND
FORECAST:
A burst of heavy rain expected from Wednesday morning until Wednesday
night. In the 16 hours from 8am to midnight Wednesday expect 100 to
150mm to accumulate. Peak intensities of 20 to 30mm per hour
Wednesday afternoon and evening.
FREEZING LEVEL: 3000 metres.

Waitomo, Taumarunui, Taupo and Taranaki: Mostly fine, however, a few showers possible about northern Taranaki.
Whanganui, Taihape, Manawatu, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa: Fine with some high cloud.
Horowhenua Kapiti Coast and Wellington: Cloudy periods, with morning drizzle, mainly about the hills.
Nelson and Marlborough: Cloudy periods with few showers, mainly about the ranges and Sounds. Fine about the Kaikoura Coast.
Canterbury: Fine with some high cloud.
Otago and Southland: Cloud increasing. Rain developing in the afternoon or evening.
Buller to Fiordland: Rain with some heavy falls about and south of Otira.

Thursday: A few showers in the northeast, and rain spreading northwards elsewhere. South Island, mainly fine in the southwest. Elsewhere, rain, possibly heavy in the west, clearing from the south, but a few showers remaining in the west.
Friday: North Island, some rain or showers in central areas easing, but mainly fine in the far south and north. South Island, one or two showers west of the divide, otherwise fine spells.
Saturday: North Island, some showers in central areas clearing, mainly fine elsewhere. South Island, mainly fine, but some rain in the far south.
Chatham Islands: On Thursday, cloudy periods, northwesterlies easing. On Friday, remaining cloudy. Light wind becoming northerly. On Saturday, sunny breaks with northwest breezes, becoming southwest at night with one or two showers.
