URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Fiordland

PROLONGED HEAVY RAIN FOR FIORDLAND.
A frontal system over the Tasman Sea is forecast to lie slow moving
over the lower South Island from Monday morning through to Wednesday
morning, bringing heavy northerly rain and thunderstorms to
Fiordland. From late Monday morning to midday Wednesday, expect
between 250 and 350mm of rain. This rain is likely to cause slips,
surface flooding, cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly, and make
tramping and driving conditions hazardous.
Note, significant heavy rain is also expected for Westland from later
Tuesday into Thursday, and people there are advised to keep up to
date with the latest Watch and Warning as it is likely to be included
in these early this week.

rain. Peak intensities of 20 to 30mm/hr, with thunderstorms likely.

Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne: Often cloudy, with a few showers.
The remainder of the North Island: Fine spells, with isolated afternoon and evening showers, mainly about the ranges.
Marlborough and Canterbury: Mostly fine.
Nelson, Buller and Westland: Cloudy periods, with a few showers, mainly about the ranges and south of the Glaciers.
Fiordland: Rain, with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms.
Otago and Southland: Rain developing in Southland this morning and scattered falls spreading elsewhere later. Isolated thunderstorms possible this afternoon and evening.
Chatham Islands: Cloudy periods.

Tuesday: North Island, fine, but occasional showers in the northeast and the central high country, and isolated afternoon showers inland elsewhere. South Island, rain or showers in the north and west. High cloud elsewhere.
Wednesday: North Island, showers north of Taihape, high cloud elsewhere. Northerlies rising to severe gale about exposed higher parts. South Island, rain in the west and north, with heavy falls. Elsewhere, high cloud, scattered rain from afternoon. Northerlies, severe gale for a time.
Thursday: Periods of rain. Heavy falls for Taranaki and the North Island central high country, also western South Island. Severe gale northerlies about exposed high parts of North Island, easing.
Friday: Rain in the north and west of both islands easing, then clearing for the North Island. Dry with high cloud in the east.
Chatham Islands: Fine and cloudy periods. Rain late Friday. Northeasterlies, strengthening Wednesday, rising to gale Thursday, before changing northwest Friday.
