Short Range Forecast


The northern and central North Island, from Taranaki and Hawkes Bay northwards: Rain developing this morning, briefly heavy, followed by cloudy periods. However, isolated showers persisting about the western Northland and coastal Gisborne.
Whanganui to Kapiti, also Taihape: Fine spells, with a few showers clearing this afternoon.
Wellington, Wairarapa, Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury and Otago: Fine, with variable high cloud.
Buller and Westland: Mainly fine, but rain developing south of Hokitika this evening and drizzle further north tonight.
Fiordland: Scattered rain, becoming persistent this evening, with heavy and possibly thundery.
Southland: Often cloudy, with a few spots of rain around midday and in the west tonight.
Chatham Islands: Occasional showers, clearing this evening.

Extended Forecast


Wednesday: North Island, occasional showers in the west and north, mainly fine in the east. South Island, periods of rain in the west, with heavy falls possible. A few spots of rain in the east before dawn, otherwise fine with high cloud.
Thursday: North Island, rain for most places, with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms in the west. South Island, rain in the west, with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms. Scattered rain at times in the east, but fine breaks also.
Friday: Showers in the west, fine or becoming fine in the east. However, scattered rain in the far south, with snow possible down to 400 metres at first.
Chatham Islands: Fine breaks on Wednesday, but showers developing later with winds turning northwest. Showers Thursday, and northwesterlies becoming strong at times. A period of rain Friday, followed by showers, with winds changing strong southwesterly.
