URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Manawatu, Kapiti Horowhenua,
Wellington, Wairarapa, Nelson
HEAVY RAIN FOR WELLINGTON, HOROWHENUA AND KAPITI
A complex trough, which has brought heavy rain to central parts of
New Zealand this morning, is expected to weaken as it moves
northwards this afternoon. Heavy rain is expected to continue about
northern Wellington, Kapiti, Horowhenua and the Tararua Range until
mid-afternoon. Rainfall rates could reach 10 to 20mm per hour around
the Wellington region, and 60mm could accumulate in a four hour
period about the Tararua Range.
People are advised that streams and rivers will rise rapidly. Also,
slips and surface flooding are likely.
Note, heavy rain about the ranges of northwest Nelson has eased.

Heavy rain is expected to ease this afternoon. In the 4 hours between
11am and 3pm Thursday, expect 40 to 60mm to accumulate about the
Tararua Range on top of what has already fallen, and 20 to 40mm in
lower lying areas. Peak intensities of 20 to 30mm per hour.
AREA/S AFFECTED: NORTHERN WELLINGTON, SPECIFICALLY TAWA, PORIRUA AND
THE HUTT VALLEY
Heavy rain is expected to ease early this afternoon. In the 2 hours
from 11am to 1pm Thursday, expect 20 to 30mm to accumulate on top of
what has already fallen. Peak intensities of 10 to 20mm per hour.
Note, rain over Wellington City has eased and no further heavy falls
are expected there.

South Taranaki and Taihape to Wellington, also Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa: Rain, with some heavy falls, easing today and clearing overnight. Cloudy periods tomorrow.
Marlborough and Canterbury: Fine and cloudy periods, with remaining showers about Marlborough clearing today.
Nelson, Buller and Westland, also Southland: Fine.
Fiordland: Drizzle developing about the Fiords tonight, then turning to widespread rain tomorrow evening.

Saturday: North Island, cloudy periods with a few showers, but becoming fine in the south and about the East Coast. South Island, early heavy rain for Fiordland, then showers. Showers in southern Westland and coastal Southland and Clutha. Mainly fine elsewhere.
Sunday: Mainly fine, but one or two showers in the far north and west of the North Island and also for Westland and rain, possibly heavy, in Fiordland.
Monday: North Island, mostly fine, but the odd shower in the west. South Island, a few showers in Westland. Rain, possibly heavy, in Fiordland and coastal Southland and Clutha, a few spots of rain elsewhere in the south, otherwise mainly fine.
Chatham Islands: On Saturday, often cloudy, with a few showers. Northerlies changing southwest overnight. On Sunday, a few early showers, then fine. Southerlies dying out. On Monday, fine at first with northwesterlies. Late southwest change and a few showers.
