URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Westland, Buller
BURST OF HEAVY RAIN FOR THE WEST OF THE SOUTH ISLAND.
A complex trough of low pressure, preceded by a moist northerly flow,
approaches the South Island from the Tasman Sea early Wednesday,
before moving onto central New Zealand early Thursday and weakening.
This complex trough is expected to bring rain to the west of the
country during Wednesday and early Thursday, with the heaviest falls
likely in Westland and the ranges of Buller. Over a 12 to 15 hour
period, 150-200mm may accumulate in Westland, especially about the
ranges, with 70-90mm possible about the ranges of Buller.
People in these areas are advised to look out for rapidly rising
streams and rivers, slips and surface flooding.

Rain is expected to become heavy Wednesday morning. In the 15 hours
between 6am and 9pm Wednesday, 150 to 200mm may accumulate in the
ranges, with 75-100mm possible near the coast. Peak rainfall
intensities 20 to 30mm/hr Wednesday morning and early afternoon.
FREEZING LEVEL: About 3000 metres rising to 3400 metres Wednesday
AREA/S AFFECTED: RANGES OF BULLER
Rain is expected to become heavy late Wednesday morning. In the 12
hours between 10am and 10pm Wednesday, 70 to 90mm may accumulate.
Peak rainfall intensities 10 to 20mm/hr Wednesday afternoon.
FREEZING LEVEL: About 3000 metres rising to 3600 metres Wednesday

Northland to Waitomo, including Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Taupo, Taumarunui: Long fine spells. Isolated showers, mainly during the afternoon and evenings.
Gisborne and Hawkes Bay: Mostly fine. High cloud increasing tomorrow.
Taranaki to Wellington, including Taihape and Wairarapa: Fine spells this evening, with isolated showers about the ranges. Cloud increasing tomorrow, and rain developing in the evening.
Nelson and Marlborough: Fine tonight, with high cloud. Scattered rain tomorrow, heavy in the west later.
Canterbury: High cloud tonight. Rain spreading northwards tomorrow.
Buller, Westland and Fiordland: Occasional rain or drizzle tonight. Rain becoming heavy tomorrow.
Otago and Southland: Cloud increasing overnight. A period of morning rain, followed by a few showers.
Chatham Islands: Cloudy periods.
Thursday: Rain or showers for most places easing, and gradually clearing for much of the South Island.
Friday: North Island, cloudy periods. Isolated showers in the north and east. South Island, cloudy periods and the odd shower in the north and west, mostly fine with high cloud elsewhere.
Saturday: Rain spreading across New Zealand, with some heavy falls for the western South Island.
Chatham Islands: Low cloud, possible fog at first on Thursday, turning to rain later. Showers clearing Friday, but remaining cloudy throughout Friday and Saturday. Northwesterlies on Thursday, changing southeasterly early Friday then tending northeasterly. Northerlies strengthening Saturday.
