URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Auckland, Waikato, Great Barrier
Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Hawkes Bay, Tararua, Wairarapa,
Manawatu, Kapiti Horowhenua, Wellington
SEVERE WESTERLY GALES FOR PARTS OF THE NORTH ISLAND
A strong, unstable westerly flow covers the North Island. Westerly
gales are expected over much of the North Island tonight and during
Friday, and these could be severe about exposed parts of Auckland,
Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula and Waikato, as well
as eastern areas south of Napier until early Friday afternoon. These
winds may damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures, and also
cause hazardous driving conditions, particularly for high-sided
vehicles and motorbikes.
Note, the warning for heavy rain about the Tararua Range is lifted.

STRONG WIND WARNING
AREA/S AFFECTED: AUCKLAND (INCLUDING GREAT BARRIER ISLAND), WAIKATO
AND THE COROMANDEL PENINSULA
Westerly gales are expected to become severe in exposed places
tonight (Thursday), with gusts of 120 km/h, possibly more in squally
thunderstorms. Winds easing early Friday afternoon.
AREA/S AFFECTED: HAWKES BAY SOUTH OF NAPIER, THE TARARUA DISTRICT AND
West to northwest gales are expected to become severe with gusts
120km/h or more in exposed places overnight, then should ease early

HEAVY RAIN WARNINGS HAVE BEEN LIFTED FOR: TARARUA RANGE
Although further heavy showers are likely tonight, accumulations are
not expected to reach warning criteria.

Northland to Kapiti, including Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and the central high country: Showers, some heavy and thundery with hail and westerly gales, all gradually easing this evening. Snow about the Desert Road this morning.
Gisborne to Wairarapa: Mostly fine, but a few showers spreading from the ranges. Northwest gales, severe south of Napier, easing.
Wellington and Nelson: Mostly fine. Remaining showers in Nelson clearing this morning, but the odd shower may affect Wellington around the middle of the day.
Marlborough and Canterbury: Fine.
Buller, Westland and Fiordland: Showers, few heavy at first. Snow to 200 metres in Fiordland and to 500 metres elsewhere.
Otago and Southland: Showers and cold southwesterlies, with snow to 200 metres, clearing by evening.
Chatham Islands: Rain to heavy showers and hail. Gale southwesterlies developing.
Saturday: North Island, a period of rain for most places with possible heavy falls in the west. South Island, rain with some heavy and possibly thundery falls in the west. Showers in the south, with snow to low levels later. Mostly fine elsewhere.
Sunday: Showers in the west and central North Island, and the west and south of the South Island. Snow to low levels in the far south. Elsewhere, mostly fine.
Monday: A period of rain and northwesterlies for western areas, followed by a few showers in the south and east with cold southerlies.
Chatham Islands: Showers, mainly morning and evening on Saturday as southwest winds turn strong northerly. On Sunday, early rain followed by showers, with strong southwesterlies. On Monday, showers and strong westerlies.
