URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Hawkes Bay, Tararua, Wairarapa,
Kapiti Horowhenua, Wellington, Fiordland, Southland, Auckland,
Waikato, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula

SEVERE WESTERLY GALES FOR PARTS OF THE NORTH ISLAND. HEAVY RAIN FOR
THE TARARUA RANGE. HEAVY SNOW FOR FIORDLAND AND SOUTHLAND.
A strong, unstable westerly flow covering the North Island is easing
and the warnings for severe gales today are now lifted.
On Saturday, a cold front moves rapidly north over the country,
bringing further westerly gales to parts of the North Island and
upper South Island, followed by colder conditions about the lower
South Island, with snow to low levels.
Severe westerly gales are expected to return to central Hawkes Bay
and the Tararua District for a time Saturday evening and Sunday
morning, gusting 120km/h in exposed places.
Heavy rain is expected to affect the Tararua Range during Saturday,
with up to 90mm likely over a 9 hour period.
In addition, heavy snow is expected about Fiordland and Southland
from Saturday evening to Sunday morning, with 10 to 20cm expected
above 200 metres.
Please note, that heavy snow can cause major distruption to traffic,
with blizzard conditions likely in exposed areas.

FORECAST:
A period of heavy rain is expected Saturday afternoon and early
evening. In the 9 hours from midday to 9pm Saturday expect 70 to 90mm
to accumulate. Peak intensities 10 to 15mm per hour.

AREA/S AFFECTED: FIORDLAND AND SOUTHLAND
FORECAST:
Showers are expected to turn to snow above 200 metres during Saturday
afternoon and evening, then to near sea level at night. In the 12
hours from 9pm Saturday to 9am Sunday expect 10 to 20cm to accumulate
above 200 metres, especially about Southern Fiordland, with lesser
amounts to near sea level.
FREEZING LEVEL: Lowering to 500 metres Saturday evening, but to 300
metres in heavier showers.

Northland to Whanganui, including Bay of Plenty and the central high country: Showers, turning to rain at times tomorrow with thunderstorms in the west from afternoon. Snow to 700 metres about Taumarunui and Taihape tomorrow night, affecting higher roads.
Gisborne, Hawkes Bay: Mostly fine. Brief rain tomorrow evening.
Manawatu to Wellington, also Wairarapa, Marlborough and Nelson: Fine tonight. Rain developing late morning tomorrow, with some heavy and thundery falls, clearing in the evening.
Canterbury: Fine, however, a few showers tomorrow afternoon.
Buller, Westland: Fine tonight. Rain developing tomorrow morning, with heavy and thundery falls, turning to showers in the afternoon. Snow to 500 metres at night.
Otago, Southland, Fiordland: Rain developing overnight, turning to showers tomorrow morning with thunderstorms and hail in the south. Snow lowering to 200 metres tomorrow evening.
Chatham Islands: Rain at times.

Sunday: Showers for western and central parts of the North Island, some heavy at first with snow affecting higher parts of Hawkes Bay, Taihape and Taumarunui. Showers for the west and south of the South Island, with morning snow to near sea level in the far south. Elsewhere, mostly fine.
Monday: North Island, a period of rain and northwesterlies for western areas, followed by showers in the west and south. South Island, morning rain in the west, then a few showers for most places as winds turn southwest.
Tuesday: North Island, a showery start to the day for most places, but clearing later and southwest winds easing. South Island, fine apart from early showers in the south and east,and some late rain for Fiordland.
Chatham Islands: Occasional rain and westerly gales on Sunday, gradually easing during Monday. On Tuesday, southwesterlies and a few showers.
