URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Fiordland, Westland
BURST OF HEAVY RAIN FOR FIORDLAND AND THE RANGES OF WESTLAND.
An active front is expected to move northeast across the South Island
today (Monday), preceded by a moist north to northwest flow. A period
of heavy rain is expected in the west, with the largest accumulations
likely to be about the ranges of Westland, where 120 to 180mm could
accumulate through to midnight. For northern Fiordland, heavy rain is
expected to ease this afternoon, but another 60 to 90mm could
accumulate on top of what has already fallen.
People are advised that streams and rivers are likely to rise
rapidly, and surface flooding and slips are possible.

AREA/S AFFECTED: FIORDLAND FROM DOUBTFUL SOUND NORTHWARDS
Heavy rain is expected to ease this afternoon. In the 7 hours between
9am and 4pm today, expect a further 60 to 90mm to accumulate on top
of what has already fallen. Peak intensities of 15 to 25mm per hour,
and thunderstorms are possible. Note, another period of heavy rain is
likely on Wednesday.

AREA/S AFFECTED: THE RANGES OF WESTLAND FROM OTIRA SOUTHWARDS
Rain is expected to become heavy this morning and should ease from
the south this evening. In the 15 hours from 9am to midnight Monday,
expect 120 to 180mm to accumulate. Peak intensities of 20 to 30mm per
hour during the afternoon and evening, and thunderstorms are
possible. Note, another period of heavy rain is likely on Wednesday.

Northland to Waikato, also Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Taupo: Fine spells and isolated showers.
Waitomo, Taumarunui and northern Taranaki: Cloudy periods and a few showers.
Manawatu, Wanganui, Taihape and southern Taranaki: High cloud.
Gisborne to Wairarapa: Fine, with variable high cloud. Brief rain in Wairarapa tomorrow morning.
Wellington and Horowhenua Kapiti Coast: A few showers developing this evening, turning to occasional rain tomorrow.
Nelson and Buller: Rain developing in Buller this evening with heavy falls, scattered falls spreading to Nelson at times. Rain clearing for a time tomorrow.
Canterbury and Marlborough: Mainly fine. Scattered rain developing about northern and western Marlborough overnight.
Westland and Fiordland: Rain, with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms, easing to coastal showers in Fiordland late afternoon and clearing from Westland overnight.
Otago and Southland: Scattered rain clearing this evening and becoming fine.
Chatham Islands: Mostly cloudy.
Wednesday: North Island, mainly fine, but showers for Northland,Taranaki, Kapiti and Wellington. Gale northerlies for Wellington. South Island, high cloud in the east, with scattered late rain in the south. Rain west of the divide, possibly heavy. Northerlies rising to gale in exposed places.
Thursday: North Island, becoming cloudy and showers or rain developing in central and southern areas. Fine in the north. South Island, rain for most places, clearing. Becoming fine in the south but remaining cloudy in the north.
Friday: North Island, mainly fine in the north. A few showers for central and southern areas clearing. South Island, a few showers in the north, and also west of the divide. Cloud about Canterbury Plains breaking during the afternoon.Otherwise fine.
Chatham Islands: Cloud increasing Wednesday, with showers and northerlies developing.A period of rain Thursday with winds changing southwest, then dying. Showers clearing but remaining cloudy Friday, and northerlies developing.
