A new scam involving automated phone calls purporting to be from Air New Zealand has prompted a public warning from the airline.

The cold calls offer prizes or discounts to people, and request credit card or other personal details.

A personal testimony on the Department of Labour website details an experience involving the scam, where a pre-recorded voice message told a person they were selected to receive a $995 credit off their next flight.

"Claiming that I was entered in the draw as a result of my last flight [it requested] I press 1 to continue, out of interest, I did and the person who picked up my call immediately asked for my credit card number. I asked who I was speaking with and the person hung up."

Air New Zealand has issued a statement clarifying the calls are not from the company and urges those who receive such a call to not give out any personal information.
