Air NZ helps passenger after dad dies

A grieving woman has thanked Air New Zealand for helping in a time of need after she collapsed in the airport upon learning her father had suddenly died.

Nikki Griffith posted her experience on the national carrier's Facebook page, saying it did everything it could to make sure she was looked after on her flight to Napier last week.

"I collapsed in the middle of Wellington airport sobbing hysterically when a kind man stopped to ask if I was alright and yelled out for help. Another man named Jeff, who I believe worked for the airline, came to us and radioed for assistance," she wrote.

She was taken to a back room where she was given water and hugs. One staff member also "made a few phone calls for me, to make sure someone would be there to collect me in Napier as soon as my flight landed".

Ms Griffith was also moved to the back of the plane where the seat next to her was left empty so she "had some privacy".

She was then escorted by staff to the gate and taken to her seat. She says the flight attendants were "so kind and caring".

"When they had a rare spare moment they would sit next to me and give me a cuddle, make sure I had eaten something as well as drinking plenty of water and tea. It was an extremely tough time made a lot easier by your fantastic staff," she wrote.

Ms Griffith, a drama student, believes her dad would have been proud of the way Air New Zealand's staff handled the situation, saying she was "eternally grateful".
