Kiwis will be able to use Apple Pay here soon - but only if they bank with ANZ.

The contactless payment system is currently available in nine countries including the US and Australia.

Japan, Russia and New Zealand are next on the list and although not officially mentioned at Apple's iPhone 7 launch on Thursday, there are rumours of an October launch here.

"Our customers in the nine markets around the world where Apple Pay is live today love how convenient it makes their day-to-day shopping," said Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay, in a written statement.

"We can't wait to bring Apple Pay to New Zealand, so customers there can start making easy, secure and private payments in their favourite stores, apps and on the web in October."

Apple Pay will work with Visa credit and debit cards issued by ANZ.

Payments are made by a user swiping their iPhone, Apple Watch, or iPad over contactless terminals.

Purchases are then authenticated with Apple's Touch ID fingerprint recognition system.

Apple Pay will also debut on the web this spring so payments can be made with Safari on Mac, as well as on-the-go with iPhone or iPad.
