Auckland Council votes to restrict alcohol hours

If you are looking for a late-night drink in Auckland you might be out of luck with the city's council voting in favour of further restrictions on liquor sales.

The provisional Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) will see bottle store sales limited to between 9am and 9pm, and some bars will be forced to close at 1am.

Cr George Wood hopes it will spark a change in New Zealand drinking culture.

"The proliferation of our liquor outlets has really been to the determent of those areas," he says.

"I'm certain that this will help, in time, to bring some control and normality in relation to alcohol use."

The policy has been under deliberation for several months and received 2600 submissions from the public.

Once the provisional policy is notified, submitters have 30 days to make an appeal.

If the move is not appealed the changes will likely kick in by Christmas.
