It's hoped a national construction forum kicking off today will help deliver a plan to tackle Auckland's housing shortage.
Representatives from the building, finance, land and design sectors are converging in Christchurch for the first time.
David Kelly from the Registered Master Builders Association says it's about giving the industry an idea of where it stands.
"What's important is that people can see the whole of the picture, not just their own perspective. We think it's absolutely critical if we're going to meet this challenge."
Mr Kelly says businesses need to partner with central and local government to fix the housing shortage.
"Businesses will need to think about how they gear up. That will depend on whether they've got certainty of the flow of work, so that's one of the issues we want to discuss.
"The question will be what sort of assurances do businesses need, what sort of partnership do we need to form with central and local government - those are things we actually need to explore."
The three-day forum is the first of its kind.
