Carter Holt Harvey fined for worker injury

Friday 21 Dec 2012 3:56 p.m.

Carter Holt Harvey Ltd has been fined $44,000 and ordered to pay $20,000 in reparation after a contractor lost four fingers in a wood chipper at its Marsden Point plant.

The drum holding blades a male worker was intending to replace in the chipper was still rotating as he was cleaning it, Whangarei District Court heard.

The rotating drum came into contact with the air hose he was holding and dragged his right hand into the machine, amputating four fingers.

The timber processing company owned by billionaire Graeme Hart is being reminded that maintenance of working parts has to carried out in accordance with agreed operating procedures and the manufacturer's operating instructions.

"On this occasion, this did not happen," says John Howard, a manager for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

"An interlock device would have prevented this accident by stopping the chipper hood from being opened to expose the blades when the drum was still rotating," he said.
