It's hoped a highway of high-powered charging stations will get New Zealanders buying more electric cars.

BMW and Charge Net NZ are planning to install 100 fast charge stations across the country. Currently there's only 30.

Transport Minister Simon Bridges says it's a major step towards reducing fuel emissions.

"I think what it requires is everyone. That is Government stepping up to do more, and we're up for that, businesses like BMW putting their money where their mouth is, but also ordinary New Zealanders.

"The people need have no fear of range anxiety… It is time for New Zealanders to step up and say 'yeah we can consider an electric vehicle given that there are choices for us as our next car'."

Mr Bridges says money is also being put into promoting the use of electric cars.

The Plugshare website shows where charging stations are around New Zealand.
