The Earthquake Commission has announced it is slashing 480 jobs as its repair work in Canterbury enters its final phase.

The cuts will take place next year and will slash the number of staff by more than half, to 380 roles.

Most of the jobs will go in Canterbury, but there will also be fewer roles in Hamilton and Wellington.

Chief executive Ian Simpson says the restructuring will reduce the organisation's operating costs by nearly $100 million a year.

"It's not around saving costs; it's about having an appropriate structure and number of people for the work that we have left to do," he says.

Mr Simpson conceded the organisation hadn't always got things right and thanked Cantabrians for their patience.
