Fullers now has a monopoly when it comes to ferry services to Waiheke Island, with Explore announcing a cessation of their ferries after two years in the game.
William Goodfellow, Explore Group's managing director, says it was a difficult decision to make, blaming plunging passenger numbers.
"We've thrown everything we could at the Waiheke service and we greatly appreciate the support of Waiheke and Auckland travellers, however the initial strong support from commuters was not sustained and ultimately the numbers did not stack up."
It leaves Fullers as the sole provider to the destination, with ferries departing from Auckland City and Devonport on the North Shore.
Explore says its ferries will continue on their usual schedule until their final sail next Sunday.
