Fairfax cuts: EPMU predicts shorter stories, less depth

Massive job losses at media giant Fairfax are bad for Kiwis who want to understand what's going on around New Zealand, a union representative has claimed.

The company has announced it will be axing more than 150 jobs as it disestablishes editorial positions while transitioning to a more "digital" newsroom, including a majority of the company's subeditors.

"Everyone loses out, they always do, because you're not getting the depth of information you need to make some of the decisions in your life – and not only the decisions in your life, but your analysis and understanding of the world," says Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union spokesman Paul Tolich.

Fairfax publishes The Dominion Post, The Press, The Sunday Star-Times, stuff.co.nz and many local papers around the country.

Mr Tolich says staff knew something was coming, but were shocked by how big the change was.

"This is the one big bang that will alter substantially the lives of a lot of our members. They're a highly skilled workforce that have contributed greatly to the accuracy of the news media and its standing today."

He says the cuts will mean shorter stories and less depth in Fairfax publications in the future.
