Fly Buys parts ways with Air NZ

Fly Buys and Air New Zealand have ended their six-year relationship.

From October 17 the two loyalty programmes are going separate ways, meaning customers will no longer be able collect Airpoints Dollars by swiping their Fly Buys card.

However, Fly Buys does have a partnership with Hello World travel agency and is planning to announce new airline partnerships, and Fly Buys points can be used to book Air New Zealand flights.

Fly Buys has been running for 20 years and partners with nearly 50 businesses offering points to collect rewards for its 2.5 million members.

Stephen England Hall, chief executive of Loyalty NZ which owns Fly Buys, says it's not a big dent in their business.

"Only 10 percent of our business customers and 15 percent of our consumers actually earned Airpoints Dollars through their Fly Buys."

Air New Zealand Airpoints members have a choice of 55 businesses where they can earn Airpoints Dollars.

Mark Street, general manager of Loyalty at Air New Zealand said "the current arrangement worked well for both organisations, but has come to its natural end point in its current form."

Air New Zealand has been focusing on growing its own partners, instead of using those through the Fly Buys network. Twenty-nine businesses had been added in the past two years.

Loyalty NZ says the loyalty programme is celebrating its 20th birthday and plans to offer a new direction.
