Gmail goes down for hours, frustrating workers

Millions of people and businesses around the world are still suffering from a lengthy Gmail outage, despite the company saying the problem has been fixed.

The trouble started in the US and UK yesterday morning (NZ time), and spread globally over the next 24 hours.

The outage is affecting Gmail for Work customers, including Newshub.

Despite Google saying the problem "should be resolved" last night, only some users have had their access restored, while others are still locked out of their accounts.

"The issue is resolved for the vast majority of affected customers and we will be working individually with the remaining customers affected," the company said on its app status page.

Google could be up for hefty compensation payments.

The company is investigating what's causing the issue.

"We will provide a more detailed analysis of this incident to the affected customers once we have completed our internal investigation."

The outage has sparked a Twitter hashtag, #gmaildown, with affected users using humour to get through the dark times.
