Kiwi businessman John Spencer dies

A hugely successful New Zealand business magnate and the head of one of the country's richest families has died in the UK.

John Spencer died surrounded by family, aged in his 80s, Scout reports.

Mr Spencer's wealth came from the Caxton group of companies which was founded by his grandfather Albert as a printing works in 1890.

The National Business Review last year put the Spencer family's worth at $720 million.

An avid sailor, Mr Spencer explored the world in a New Zealand-built yacht named after his wife who died in 1992.

When he was in New Zealand he would often be seen sailing around Hauraki Gulf and Waiheke Island where the family was the largest private landowner.

They owned the Man O' War Station and Man O' War Vineyard.

But while much of Mr Spencer's time in the past 20 years had been spent in the UK, he had a large number of business interests in property around New Zealand including Northland, Auckland's North Shore and the Hauraki Gulf.

He is survived by his sister and two children Mertsi and Berridge.
