Australian radio boss Michael Anderson has been appointed chief executive officer of MediaWorks.

Mediaworks said Mr Anderson, currently chairman of Oztam and oOH! Media and a non-executive director of Fairfax Media, will start in the role on August 29.

"On behalf of the board, I am thrilled to welcome Michael to MediaWorks," said MediaWorks chairman Rod McGeoch.

"This is a pivotal time for the media industry and with many years of high profile media experience - as a CEO, a board director and in sales, Michael brings the perfect credentials to lead MediaWorks through these dynamic times."

Mr Anderson spent seven years as CEO of Austereo (now Southern Cross Austereo), one of Australia's largest commercial radio groups. Before that he was Austereo's group director of sales.

Under Mr Anderson's leadership, Austereo's performance in both revenue and audience grew significantly in a time of huge change to the industry.

"MediaWorks is a company with strong brands and a strong history in New Zealand," said Mr Anderson.

"With the global disruption in media continuing, this an excellent time to join and lead MediaWorks through a difficult but exciting period."

MediaWorks' latest radio survey results placed it number one network in the country, with more than 2.1 million listeners every week.

David Chalmers, who has been acting chief executive since May will be leaving the business later in the year to take on the role of chief financial officer at Spark NZ.

"David has done a fantastic job leading MediaWorks over the last few months as well as during his time as chief financial officer," said Mr McGeoch.

"Whilst we are very sad to lose him, he leaves us for a fantastic opportunity and on behalf of the board, we would like to wish him the very best and thank him for everything he has done for MediaWorks."

Mr Anderson's appointment follows the departure of Mark Weldon, who quit in May citing the "personal cost" of staying in the role.
