Millionaire's abandoned mansion up for mortgagee sale

If you're in the market for a holiday mansion, this 623 square metre home could be the place for you.

The six-bedroom luxury escape was owned by an American millionaire and his wife – a former Miss Brazil. Now, it's on the market through a mortgagee sale after the couple abandoned the property, reports Fairfax NZ.

Westpac took possession of the property after its millionaire owners failed to meet mortgage commitments. It's believed they spent around one month a year at the mansion and last stayed there during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Clothing and other personal items were found in the house and have now been shipped back to the owners' home in Florida.

The house is within the Wharekauhau Estate in the Wairarapa, east of Wellington.

It sits on almost 4000 square metres of land and was built around 13 years ago.

Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, the Rolling Stones and Bill Gates are among the celebs who have stayed at the mansion. The main Wharekauhau Lodge is available for a mere minimum of $920 per night.

The land is situated on the Wharekauhau rural lifestyle enclave which overlooks Palliser Bay.

Hollywood movie mogul James Cameron could be your new neighbour, as he plans to build his New Zealand home in a nearby valley.

The horse-shoe shaped home was built for several families or groups simultaneously, with guest wings having access to their own living areas.

"The exclusive nature of the Wharekauhau complex ensures total privacy from the outside world – which was obviously an attraction for the owner who could jet in and out of New Zealand without any public recognition of who he was," says Grant Henderson of Bayleys Wellington.

Not only can the new owner "jet in and out" when he or she wants, the property is just a short 15-minute helicopter ride from downtown Wellington.

The house has a value of $1.6 million, but was reportedly mortgaged for around $2m.

If you can spare a bit of change, tenders for this luxury mansion close September 18.
