Miners on the West Coast have failed to reach a deal with Solid Energy over plans to cut costs.
A meeting was held yesterday to discuss reducing shifts at the Stockton mine from 12 to 10 hours in a bid to avoid redundancies.
EPMU area organiser Garth Elliott says that would result in a significant pay reduction.
"Obviously there was a shortfall of up to 17 percent of wages, and the membership certainly weren't happy about that," he says.
"We discussed that and put it to a vote, and obviously it was turned down and rejected."
Mr Elliott says job losses haven't been mentioned at this stage, and they will continue talks after Christmas.
