A business commentator believes developing the sheep milk industry could help avoid the commodity traps that are hobbling the dairy industry.

However, to do so would require a greater investment in scientific research to reduce production costs and increase yield.

Rod Oram believes the market is there for sheep's milk.

"Particularly in Asia, people are conscious that small-scale sheep farming could be a more natural process than large-scale industrial farming, so those are some of the attributes that consumers are picking up on," he says.

Mr Oram adds farming sheep for their milk is 30 percent less damaging for the environment than dairying.
