A new Singapore Airlines 'Capital Express' service between Wellington and Canberra has been confirmed following rumours circulating about the route last week.
In a joint news conference at Wellington Airport this afternoon, airline executive vice president commercial Mak Swee Wah said the service between the countries' capitals will be popular with corporate, leisure and government travellers.
Subject to regulatory approval, the flights will begin in September and operate four times a week.
It is the first trans-Tasman flight between the capitals and onward to Singapore.
The service will also become the first non-trans-Tasman carrier to operate from more than two destinations in New Zealand, already flying out of Christchurch and Auckland.
"New Zealand is a very important part of our global route network and is a popular destination for visitors from around the globe," Mr Mak says.
Wellington Airport chief executive Steve Sanderson said the new service is an historic day for the city and would open up more destinations.
The new flights will be operated using 266-seat retrofitted Boeing 777-200 aircraft, with 38 Business Class seats and 228 Economy Class seats.
Tickets go on sale from Monday, with fares from $1808 for Wellington to Singapore return and $587 from Wellington to Canberra return.
The new service was rumoured last week, though Singapore Airlines would not confirm it.
