SkyCity cleaners win fight to keep jobs

Cleaners at SkyCity are breathing a sigh of relief after the company announced it won't be trying to outsource their jobs.

The Service and Food Workers Union has been locked in a dispute with the company, despite the Employment Relations Authority ruling in the cleaners' favour.

SkyCity has now announced it won't appeal that ruling, which union organiser Lynette Blacklaws says is good news for the workers.

"They have job security again, they don't face the prospect of working for a contractor and earning less money, not knowing how many hours they're going to work each week."

Ms Blacklaws says it's been a rough 12 months for the 90 cleaners employed by the casino operator.

"SkyCity had appealed that decision and we were still going through the process, and it was just wonderful news to hear that they had withdrawn their appeal."

She says the cleaners risked being exploited if they were forced to transfer their employment to outside contractors.

The union is confident it will have a good relationship with SkyCity going forward.
