Taranaki well-placed for oil industry – mayor

A Taranaki mayor wants oil giant Shell to stay in the region but says it won't be the end of the world if it pulls out.

The oil company has stakes in three Taranaki oil fields but is reviewing its global operations, saying New Zealand is a small part of its business.

New Plymouth Mayor Andrew Judd says Taranaki is well set up for the oil industry.

"We've got a lot of expertise and experience," he says. "It's clearly a lovely place to live, to raise a family and to open a business. That infrastructure's there so we need to make sure we capitalise on the experience and skillsets that we have."

Mr Judd says Shell has played a valuable role in Taranaki's community.
