Youth advocates are urging a team effort to get Auckland's Unitary Plan into action.
It's been signed off by the council after years of debate, Generation Zero's Leroy Beckett says a collaborative approach is needed to make it a reality.
"It really is just the start. This plan allows it to happen. Now the council and the Government and housing providers have to work together to actually get the building done."
The plan changes Auckland's planning rules to allow the construction of more than 400,000 new residential homes to meet the demands of the city's growth over the next 30 years.
"It means we have a shot at building an affordable, liveable city," says Mr Beckett.
"We haven't been building up houses for decades now, and this is the first time that we really will be able to do to that."
Auckland property prices have skyrocketed in recent years, locking many young people out of the housing market. Generation Zero backed the Unitary Plan to try and get more affordable, compact housing built.
