Toyota New Zealand is recalling nearly 37,000 cars over fears a fault could lead to a leaking fuel tank.

The recall is part of the global recall of 2.9 million Corolla/Auris, Prius, Prius PHV, SAI and Lexus CT200h, HS 205h models manufactured between 2006 and 2015.

The problem lies with a possible crack in a charcoal canister designed to prevent fuel emissions into the atmosphere.

The crack could mean a minor fuel leak when the vehicle has a full tank of fuel.

Toyota is contacting vehicle owners to get the work done, which should take two to three hours.

Concerned customers can call 0800 TOYOTA (0800 869 682).

Earlier this week, Toyota said it was also recalling 1162 Lexus CT 200h and Toyota Prius models because of cracks in air bag inflators.
