TVNZ's Chief Executive is under fire for his interpretation of his channel's charter obligations to Maori.
Rick Ellis told the Maori affairs select committee that crime show ‘Police 10-7’ and prison show ‘Lockdown’ are examples of TVNZ's commitment to Maori.
The charter requires TVNZ to ensure a significant Maori voice, and Mr Ellis listed a number of programmes he says fulfil that, including ‘Dream Home’, ‘Shortland Street’ and ‘Intrepid Journeys’.
Maori historian Paul Moon describes Mr Ellis's comments as obscene.
