TVNZ discusses moving studios

TVNZ bosses have admitted they're discussing moving their Hobson Street studios after speculation Sky City might buy them to build a convention centre in Auckland.

A select committee has heard TVNZ’s chairman Wayne Walden received assurances from a cabinet minister, but the broadcaster is already engaging professionals.

Mr Walden told MPs that after news reports broke about a possible purchase of the TVNZ studios by Sky City, he spoke to Minister Craig Foss. Mr Foss reportedly told Mr Walden he did not know about this, but if it got to that stage any discussion would be on a commercial basis.

TVNZ chief executive Kevin Kenrick says the organisation has had preliminary discussions with an architect and a quantity surveyor “examining their options”.

MPs have asked for more information about the possible cost of relocating the state broadcaster’s studios.
