Television New Zealand news boss Ross Dagan has resigned, after 12 months in the job.

Mr Dagan cited personal reasons for his departure – a position at the Seven Network in Australia will see him return to his hometown of Brisbane.

One News reporter Heather du Plessis-Allan tweeted this afternoon that the newsroom had “erupted into a chorus of OMGs”.

“Just wait. You’ll hear why soon enough.”

“I am thoroughly enjoying my role as head of news and current affairs and relish the opportunities it continues to provide me. There’s no doubt there’s more to do,” Mr Dagan said in a memo send to TVNZ staff this afternoon.

“However, we all face difficult crossroads at some point - the need to find the right mix of work, life and family has come into sharp focus for me and my family in recent times, and it is at the heart of my decision.”

Mr Dagan will leave the broadcaster in March.
