The finalists for the 2017 Billy T Award are Angella Dravid, Li'i Alaimoana, Patch Lambert, Paul Williams and Ray O'Leary.

The accolade is named in honour of the legendary Kiwi comedian Billy T James and is hoped to not only recognise outstanding potential, but also help foster and encourage New Zealand comedic talent.

This year's five nominees were whittled down from a record 32 applicants, which organisers say is indicative of the substantial growth of budding talent in New Zealand's comedy industry.

"The comedians presented a plethora of creative inspiration in their show pitches. On stage their performances were electrifying and showcased some of the fresh ideas coming through," say organisers the New Zealand Comedy Trust.

"This surge of exciting talent coming through means that the New Zealand comedy scene is certainly in great shape."

Launched in 1997, the Billy T Awards have honoured several of New Zealand's most well-known comics, including Ewen Gilmour, Rose Matafeo, Dai Henwood, Paul Ego, Guy Williams and Guy Montgomery.

The new winner will be announced on May 21, 2017.
