Music has been called the food of love but more than often it can also be the food for thought.

Now an interesting ensemble in Mexico is taking that adage to the limit.

Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez has a reputation as one of the world's most violent cities.

But 6700 firearms seized from her streets are allowing sculptor Pedro Reyes to show people a different way of using them.

"The idea is to transform an agent of death into an agent of life,” Reyes says. “Why? Because weapons make people not want to go out into the street, hide and we have experienced an abandonment of public spaces in Mexico which makes our cities very unsafe. The same transformation we are making with these weapons is a transformation we would like to see in society.”

Reyes has worked out how to produce sweet music from a xylophone fashioned from the magazines of assault rifles

He considers he's exorcising the demons of the weapons bloody past.

“It turns into a very interesting creative process where you start seeing what sounds you can extract from these different parts and it's a very interesting sculpting process,” Reyes says. “It's like a collage where you combine parts from one [weapon] with another and you reach surprising results."

It is the sound of 6000 guns, like you've never heard them before.
