Adam Lambert the singer who kissed a guy and many people liked it, is in Auckland as part of a promotional tour.

The American Idol runner-up's second album went to number one in the US earlier this year.

Glamberts - fans of the singer - have a reputation for being some of the most passionate in pop.

One devout Kiwi fan got her armed tattooed after Lambert signed her arm at the airport this morning.

“I got it tattooed because that's what he means to me,” she says.

In a not so glamorous back room the 30-year-old explained why his fans are into him but not nearly as screamy as Directioners and Beliebers.

“I'm more grown up than the gentlemen you mentioned. I'm not 19 although sometimes I wish I was, though sometimes I don't wish that on anyone ever again.”

And that's the magic of Lambert the beautiful outsider - understood only by his fans of which there are millions. They see him for a standard bearing for being different in a world of conformity.

“For the younger fans I like to take on a big brother role for them,” Lambert says. “I like to encourage strength, bravery, originality and connection and some of my older fans look at me like a son.”

For the young Lambert it was Freddie Mercury who inspired him.

“He just did whatever the hell he wanted. He was in charge and I looked at the early stuff and what he wore was amazing and ridiculous. [I] loved the fashion and obviously the music.”

And completing the circle this year, Lambert went on tour with Queen performing in front of his biggest audience ever – 250,000 people in the Ukraine.
