Lorde has received glowing praise after performing a heartfelt tribute to the late David Bowie at the Brit Awards.

It came on a night dominated by Adele, who won four prizes including Best Album.

Lorde says David Bowie taught her to be proud of her "spiky strangeness" and at today's Brit Awards, the Kiwi singer got a chance to publicy pay tribute to the late British icon.

Lorde teamed up with Bowie's former backing band to perform his 1971 hit 'Life On Mars'.

Bowie's son Duncan Jones called the rendition "just beautiful".

Unsurprisingly, the awards section of the ceremony was all about Adele.

She won four awards, including Best British Solo Artist, Best Album and Best British single.

"To come back after so long away and to be so warmly received is really lovely, thanks so much," she said in her acceptance speech.

Coldplay beat out One Direction for best British group, making them the most successful band in the Brit's history with nine trophies.

Singer-songwriter James Bay teamed up with Justin Bieber to perform the pop stars' most recent single, 'Love Yourself'.

For their efforts, Bay won Best Male and Bieber was named Best International Male.
