The new big-screen version of videogame icon Lara Croft has been revealed as Alicia Vikander.

The star of Ex Machina and The Danish Girl is picking up the torch from Angelina Jolie, who starred in two previous Tomb Raider film adaptations.

Warner Bros' upcoming Tomb Raider reboot is being directed by Roar Uthuag (The Wave). The reboot will see Croft going on her very first adventure.

Daisy Ridley of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and model/actress Cara Delevigne were both also considered for the role, according to reports.

British actress Camilla Luddington played Croft in the two most recent, critically acclaimed Tomb Raider games, which are grittier and more violent than the classic releases.

The first Tomb Raider game was released in 1996 and the franchise went on to sell more than 45 million copies.

Vikander's other credits include The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Fifth Estate, A Royal Affair, Anna Karenina, Son of a Gun, Seventh Son and the upcoming Jason Bourne.
