Television presenter Alison Mau has ended months of speculation, confirming her same-sex relationship.

Mau introduced girlfriend Karleen Edmonds to the audience at a fundraiser at Auckland’s Aotea Centre on Saturday.

Moments before announcing the winner of the Queen of the Whole Universe fundraising project, Mau told the audience; “There is no room in my life for bigotry of any kind and I am proud to be standing amongst this community.”

She then went on to introduce Edmonds by saying she was looking “incredibly hot”.

The audience erupted into cheers and applause, according to  reports.

She said her attraction to Edmonds came as a surprise.

“I have fallen in love with a wonderful woman and it was just so unexpected.”

Mau later confirmed to GayNZ.com “yes... I am bisexual”.

She said she hadn’t wanted to confirm her relationship until then, and media speculation had caused her grief.

Mau, who was formerly married to fellow TVNZ news anchor Simon Dallow, told the website she was aware of the impact it would have on her family.

“I had to bear in mind the effect this would have on my children and ex-husband.”
