Arguably the funniest woman in Hollywood has become the fourth highest-paid comedian in the world - the first time a female has ever cracked the annual Forbes' list's top five.

Amy Schumer, who is best known for her roles in Trainwreck and her Emmy Award-winning show Inside Amy Schumer, has toured heavily over the past year, contributed heavily to the US$17 million (NZ$23.3 million) she made last year.

However that wasn't the only thing driving her success - her new book The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo earned her a very handy US$8 million ($10.9 million) alone, which has been supplemented further by commercial appearances.

However, perhaps an even bigger surprise is that Jerry Seinfeld has been removed from the highest-paid comic spot he has occupied for the last 10 years - and replaced by none other than Kevin Hart.

The 37-year-old, who has surged in popularity in recent years, made a staggering US$87.5 million ($120 million) last year, thanks in large part to his hugely successful stand-up show.

Hart tours heavily, and played more than 100 shows in the last 12 months - with each show grossing more than US$1 million ($1.37 million) on average, which Hart takes a large portion of, according to Forbes.

Hart has added to his stand-up earnings by taking up major roles in films The Secret Life of Pets and Central Intelligence, as well as starring in commercials for global brands like Hyundai and Foot Locker.

He usurped Jerry Seinfeld on the list by a whopping US$34 million ($46.6 million), ending the Seinfeld star's reign over the list he has enjoyed since 2006.

Joining them on the top ten list are British comic John Bishop (No. 10 - US$7 million), Russell Peters (No. 9 - US$9 million), Gabriel Iglesias (No. 8 - US$9.5 million) and first-timer Jim Gaffigan (No. 7 - US$12.5 million).

Veteran comedian Dave Chappelle claimed sixth spot with US$13 million, ventriloquist Jeff Dunham snagged fifth with US$13.5 million, and Schumer finished in fourth.

Another puppeteer, Terry Fator (US$21 million), comes in at third on the list thanks largely to his deal with the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, while Seinfeld (US$43.5 million) and Hart take out the top two spots.
