A new temporary light sculpture exploring dementia has been installed in Auckland's Aotea Square.

Designed by Australian design team Amigo and Amigo, 'Affinity' is a series of orbs linked together across a 13m by 13m area, which light up when touched.

The striking orbs, which represent neurons in the brain, also play sounds and stories of Kiwis affected by dementia.

Around 60,000 Kiwis are thought to be living with dementia, and this display is being presented by Auckland Live in partnership with Alzheimers NZ, as part of World Alzheimer's Month.

"It is a privilege to be bringing such a powerful and beautiful art installation to New Zealand to help shed light on the issue of dementia during World Alzheimer's Month," says Auckland Live's Georgina Cervin.

Around 400 metres of LED strip lights were used to construct the work.

The sculpture will be lit up between 5pm and 11pm daily, until September 22.
