Apple says the next version of its mobile operating system will have more than 100 new emojis.

iOS 10 is out this spring, and the company's promising "more gender options to existing characters", "new female athletes and professionals", "beautiful redesigns of popular emoji", a new rainbow flag and "more family options".

"Apple is working closely with the Unicode Consortium to ensure that popular emoji characters reflect the diversity of people everywhere," the company said on its website.

The gun is gone, replaced by a water pistol on iOS.

The Unicode Consortium is the international organisation which ensures emoji are consistent across devices and platforms, so iOS users can send emoji to Android phones, for example.

It's not just new emoji Apple is promising though - when writing a message, iOS' QuickType will now suggest emojis based on what you're typing, even offering to replace your words with pictures completely.
