Hip-hop artist Lil Jon is returning to New Zealand to perform at Auckland's Powerstation in October.

The 'Get Low' vocalist and Celebrity Apprentice contestant, famous for pioneering the 'crunk' movement, had a number of hits in the '90s with his East Side Boyz crew before going solo.

More recently, Lil Jon had success with his DJ Snake collaboration 'Turn Down for What'. Released late last year, it peaked at number four on the USA's Hot 100 chart and number 10 on the New Zealand singles chart.

The bizarre 'Turn Down for What' music video (below) has now been viewed more than 96 million times on YouTube.

Lil Jon was last in New Zealand for the 2008 MTV Snowjam event.

The rapper has started to refer to becoming intoxicated as getting 'turnt' rather than 'crunk'. If you are wondering what the exact difference in meaning between these terms is, the Atlanta-based musician told Vice recently: "It's the same thing, it's just evolved, man. Turning up is the same as getting crunk pretty much, it's just for a younger generation right now."

Lil Jon's gig takes place at the Powerstation on October 16. Tickets go on sale August 13.
