Best-selling The Power of One author Bryce Courtenay has died in Canberra aged 79.

The South African-born novelist had been suffering stomach cancer and was at his home when he died at 11pm yesterday, his family says.

Courtenay published his first book The Power of One in 1989. The novel is set in South Africa during the ‘30s and ‘40s, and centres on one man’s personal relationships before and during the Apartheid era. It was later made into a film starring Morgan Freeman, Stephen Dorff and Daniel Craig in his first major film role.

Courtenay moved to Australia in the ‘50s and was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1995 before being awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Canberra in October 2012.

He is survived by his second wife Christine Gee and his children Adam and Brett.
