The cast of just-released Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice have responded to the hammering it's taking from critics.

The Zack Snyder superhero film currently has a rating of just 29 percent on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, although it is faring better with 44 percent on Metacritic.

Henry Cavill, who plays Superman in the film, told Yahoo Movies that he believes reviewer's opinions "come from a place" which "affects everything". He also says what really matters is not what critics says, but what the fans say.

"Because they're the ones who are buying tickets, they're the ones who want to see more of this kind of story or not and so the audience's voice is loudest and after this weekend the audience, at least partly, will have spoken," says Cavill.

Co-star Amy Adams adds: "None of us are making the movies for the critics; you can't go into it with that perspective. I know we really hope the fans like it and so far the reaction has been really positive on that front.

"If you're interested in a film you should see it and form your own opinion rather than just going on the word of somebody [else]".

Negative reviews describe an incoherent, grim superhero film with effects-driven action that crowbars in too many elements while setting up the Justice League franchise.

"No major blockbuster in years has been this incoherently structured, this seemingly uninterested in telling a story with clarity and purpose," writes Robbie Collin in Britain's Daily Telegraph.

Joe Morgenstern's Wall Street Journal review warns: "Spasms of highfalutin philosophy and howlingly pretentious dream sequences, serve only as the thinnest of veneers for incessant action in one of the most assaultive movies ever made."

"Blunt, humourless, and baffling, it collides the brutish directorial stamp of its director with the most shameless instincts of our latter-day superhero franchise bubble," writes Slate's Jonathan L Fischer.

Drew McWeeny at Hitfix describes himself as a fan of Man of Steel and Snyder in general, but was "baffled" by what he calls an infomercial for Warner Bros' upcoming slate of superhero movies.

"This is the least compelling franchise come-on since The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and as the closing credits concluded, I was relieved to see there was no post-credits scene."

The Yahoo Movies interview with Cavill and Ben Affleck has also spawned a popular new meme, the Batman V Superman -- Sad Affleck video (above), which has clocked up over 1.3 million views in just over a day.
