Ben Affleck has confirmed that he will both direct and star in a stand-alone Batman film for Warner Bros.

The news, which has long been rumoured, was confirmed at industry event CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Affleck hasn't directed a feature since 2012's Argo, which received widespread critical acclaim and scores of awards, including the Oscar for Best Picture.

The Daredevil star made his debut as the Caped Crusader in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which was directed by Zack Snyder and released this year to generally negative reviews.

Despite a huge opening weekend at the box office, the film is also said to be a financial disappointment for Warner Bros, and is unlikely to reach the coveted US$1 billion worldwide mark.

No plot details or other casting has been announced for the upcoming Batman film.

It will be just one of several DC Comics movies planned for release by Warner Bros over the next four years, along with Suicide Squad, Justice League parts one and two, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash.
