Kiwi alt-pop act Broods has been named Best New Zealand act at the 2016 MTV European Music Awards (EMAs).

The 'Heartlines' hitmakers, who lead the nominations at this year's Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, beat off competition from Ladyhawke, Maala, Sachi and Kings for the honour.

It's their third time being nominated and first win, having lost out last year to Savage and to Lorde in 2014.

Justin Bieber's 'Sorry' and the Weeknd's 'Starboy' took out the two biggest awards at the event; Best Song and Best Video, respectively.

Other big wins went to Lady Gaga (Best Female), Shawn Mendes (Best Male), Coldplay (Best Rock) and Drake (Best Hip-Hop).

The Rotterdam awards ceremony was coloured purple in honour of Prince and featured performances by Bruno Mars, the Weeknd, Green Day and Kings of Leon.
