Billy Crystal thrilled by chilly powhiri welcome

US comedian Billy Crystal says he's glad to be in New Zealand so that he can get the stress of the Republican convention off his mind.

Crystal has touched down in Auckland for two shows and says he might consider finding a nice little ranch here if Donald Trump wins the election.

The When Harry Met Sally and Princess Bride star has holidayed here once, but he travelled all the way from Blanket Bay in Otago to Auckland.

"I spent a month here nine years ago and I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back," he says.

"But it's a spectacular country and I love all the blends of people and the cultures here."

This time the veteran comedian is staying put in the big smoke for two performances in front of a live audience.

"I can't believe I've never performed in your beautiful country but in my effort to get away from Donald Trump I'm bringing my brand new show to Auckland."

Yes, the nine-time Oscars host isn't the biggest fan of the Donald.

Crystal landed just as the Republicans anointed Mr Trump as their presidential candidate.

"It's very interesting being in this part of the world while the American process is happening, and it just gives you a lot of perspective about America's place in the world and what's happening," he says.

"So I'm glad to be here to at least have some fun and get that stress off my mind."

The welcoming powhiri warmed Crystal, but not our winter.

"To be greeted by naked people in this weather, it shows what a hardy group is here and I hope people come out to see our shows."

Crystal wowed Australian audiences and he's confident we'll love him too.

"People down here have just been amazing. That's why I wanted to start this tour in this part of the world, there's the joyous people, respectful and it's just been fantastic.

"So Auckland is on the clock because everybody else has been great so far."

For two nights Crystal plans to forget the race for the White House and maybe even check out some of our real estate, just in case it doesn't go his way.
